Safely: 'Tis the season to be jolly... For many people this means hosting holiday parties for family and friends, shopping, wrapping, baking and decorating your home. As the holidays approach, here are some safety tips from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to keep your home safe and festive during the holiday season: * Select holiday decorations made with flame resistant, flame-retardant or other non-combustible materials. * In homes with small children, take special care to avoid decorations that are sharp, breakable or look like food or candy. * Keep trimmings with small removable parts out of the reach of children and pets to prevent choking. * When purchasing an artificial tree, look for a "Fire Resistant" label. * When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness. A fresh tree is green, fragrant and the needles are hard to pull from the branches. * When setting the tree up at home, keep away from heating vents, fireplaces and candles. Always keep the stand filled with water. Place the tree away from traffic and not blocking doorways. * Fasten outdoor lights securely to protect them from wind damage. * Candle lighting ceremonies during Advent, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are beautiful traditions, but take care to keep matches, lighters and candles away from children. * NEVER leave burning candles unattended.
